How to Calculate Gear Ratios Manually: Tooth Count Formulas

In mechanical engineering and automotive design, the gear ratio measures the relationship between two or more interlocking gears. Calculating this ratio is key to understanding the speed and torque changes of a transmission.

The Core Tooth Count Formula

The most direct way to calculate the gear ratio of a simple gear pair is by counting the number of teeth on both the driving (input) and driven (output) gears. The formula is:

For example, if a driving gear has 10 teeth and the driven gear has 30 teeth, the gear ratio is 3:1 ((30 \div 10 = 3)). This means the input gear must rotate three times to turn the output gear once.

Calculating Multi-Stage Gear Trains

In a compound gear train where multiple gears are locked on the same shaft, you calculate the gear ratio of each pair individually and multiply them together to find the overall gear reduction.
