Estimating Gearbox Mechanical Efficiency and Friction Losses

No transmission is 100% efficient. Some engine power is always lost to friction as teeth mesh, bearings spin, and oil is churned inside the casing.

Friction Losses by Gear Design

Standard manual transmissions are highly efficient, losing only 2% to 5% of torque per gear mesh. Automatic transmissions with planetary gear sets and torque converters experience higher losses, ranging from 10% to 15% due to fluid drag.

Improving Efficiency
